Assignmnet 2A - Bug List

1. People going into the 10 items or less line at Publix with more than 10 items.
Why: People either dont realize that they have more than 10 items, or are usually pretty close to it or that they are trying to get out of the store fast and they dont care that it will hold up the line that it supposed to be for efficiency, for people who need to get a small amount of items in and out in a timely manner and not make them wait behind a long line of people buying their weekly groceries.

2. When people try to run a yellow light before it turns red.
Why: They know that there is a delay between the traffic lights for safety reasons, for people like them trying to run the light, or that they dont care and would rather risk their safety and the safety of others in the attempt to shave a couple of minutes off their drive.

3. Drivers in the fast lane but drive under the speed limit.
Why: They believe the speed limit is there for a reason and that no one should be going very far above it so they dont see the need to drive in a specific lane. There is no law saying that people who drive the speed limit or a little under should be in a specific lane, just says that large vehicles should stay in the far right lane. Some roads have signs saying slower traffic stay right but I am not aware of that being enforced except in extreme situations.

4. Pedestrians who take a long time to cross the street in front of Beaty Towers.
Why: The crosswalk in front of Beaty Towers is a very popular one for pedestrians because they know that the car/bus has to stop for them because its a law as opposed to crossing at a light where they are timed, because of this, they just take their time instead of walking with a purpose.

5. People who dont hold the elevator door for you at Library West.
Why: People who are Lib West have usually been there studying for a long time so when they leave on the elevator they might be in a mad/bad mood and not want to or the fact that they are consumed on their phones and they just dont see you coming in time.

6. When your hip-hop fitness class smells really bad during your 9:30pm class.
Why: 9:30pm is late for a fitness class and in general just late in the day so people might have not taken a shower yet and come into class already smelling or they chose to not wear deodorant for a variety of reasons. There are also a lot of people doing intense cardio at a time so the sweat smell is intensified greatly.

7. Employees at kiosks at the Oaks Mall trying to give you free samples.
Why: Their job is to give out samples to promote their product and the only way to get the product into peoples hands fast is to basically shove it in their face and some people find this intrusive. They need to give the samples out or lure people in for a demonstration to build interest in their product and possibly make a sale.

8. People who are right on your tail on museum road where the speed limit is 25mph.
Why: 25mph is very slow but that road is very narrow at some points and has a lot of blind turns with pedestrian cross walks so the speed limit is in place for safety, but people still like to try to go faster because there aren't many places  on campus that have that slow of a speed limit for that length of road.

9. Bikers/skateboarders who seem to not care about almost running over you at Turlington.
Why: They are riding their bike or skateboard to get to their destination faster than they could if they walked, so they are usually in a rush. and with Turlington being a hub to students walking, and people promoting clubs, there are a lot of obstacles for them to avoid so they dont have that much room to maneuver around people at a safe distance.

10. Library West is always cold, makes it hard to focus.
Why: The library is usually pretty busy so they need to keep it cold so that all of the people and lights and computers dont make it feel hotter than it needs to be. also they do have a big selection of books here that they need to keep in good condition as well so if they got too hot they wouldn't last as long.

11. Starbucks employees who spell my name wrong (Keyla - Kayla).
Why: They see a lot of people every day and definitely get to hear a variety of names so it is common for them to know only one version of how to spell a name and since it is so busy they dont have time to ask every individual person how to spell their name. Also, the room is very loud with the music and all the machines working so they could also just misunderstand the name they were told.

12. South West Rec room gets so hot during Zumba on Tuesday nights.
Why: The choreography is very intense so everyone is doing a hard workout so it gets hot pretty fast and there are no fans or open windows to allow for ventilation so the only place for the heat to go is out the front door but it is so far away that it doesn't really do anything substantial to help.

13. Shower in Beaty Towers dorm is either freezing or scorching hot, no in-between.
Why: Beaty Towers is a really old building on campus so the shower systems are not topo of the line stuff and the fact that there are 14 floors with around 8 rooms on each floor that all have a shower, fixing the problem would require maintenance to shut off the water to the whole building, inconveniencing a lot of people, so if its not that big of an issue they are in np rush to fix it.

14. Recycling at Beaty Towers is outside the building, opposed to trash chutes on every floor.
Why: There is a trash chute on every floor on Beaty for easy trash removal from your room but there is no recycling, this is because the recycling initiative was not in place when Beaty was built so they only have one chute and that recycling is still not a high priority for students so they give them the option but the bin is outside in front of the buildings.

15. The Chick-Fl-A on campus does not take gift cards.
Why: The chick fl a on the UF campus is a licensed location, meaning that it is not really affiliated with chick fl a besides offering their products, but it is still a limited menu and does not have all their items available in the off campus franchised locations.

16. Marston third floor is extremely crowded around 12 noon everyday.
Why: Marston's location is very central to campus, there are a lot of classes in the CSE building and Turlington, as well as being walking distance from the Hub and Chick-Fl-A, this makes it an easy place for students around lunch time to stop and eat, relax, or find a place to sit down and do some work. especially on the third floor, it is very bright and open feeling so it is popular among the students.

17. Limited number of outlets in the Hub to charge your computer/phone.
Why: The Hub was probably not built to  be a study building, more as a building to serve as a go-between where people get food or wait for their bus so the emphasis on outlets was probably not high on the list when it was constructed.

18. That I cant use find my friends app on people who dont have iPhone.
Why: iPhone prides themselves on being different than android and other types of smartphones, so they made the find my friends app to only be compatible with other iPhone, this is inconvenient for people who have family members or friends with a Samsung or google pixel phone who dont have the ability to download the app.

19. When your roommates dont clean their dishes up and leave them for someone else.
Why: They could have come from a home where their parents just cleaned all of their dishes and didn't have to wash them themselves. Or they could assume that since its not a lot of dishes, that one of the other roommates will just take care of it for them.

20. Websites that make it hard for you to unsubscribe from their emails.
Why: Because email is such a good form of promotion and it is so easy to get information about sales and new products out to your customers very fast, so when someone wants to not receive emails anymore, most websites make you answer questions about why you want to be removed from their email list and try to get you to not cancel the subscription.

Reflection
At first after just hearing about the assignment I thought it was going to be difficult because a lot of things bother me but I dont remember them long enough or I get over it fast enough to where I wouldn't be able to put in into words for an assignment. But once I watched the video about this assignment and followed the tip to just do a couple a day as opposed to trying to do them all at once it became very easy and I actually found myself with more than 20 bugs using this method. Furthermore, when I was writing the "why" portion for each bug, I often found myself starting to explain why it bugged me as opposed to why the problem exists. This was the one part of the project that I had to remain cognizant of so I would stay on topic. Finally, I did find this project to be thought provoking because it showed me to think of the why behind what I am feeling on an every day basis and I see how doing this can lead to having an idea for solving a problem you identify.

Comments

  1. Hi Kayla! I completely agree with you that people who drive under the speed limit is the worst especially when they can drive in the slower lanes. I wrote a very similar bug on my blog, but mine was about how people don't use their turn signal when they turn. Overall, I think you did a really great job at your bug list. You had very specific bugs, and your explanations for them were well thought out.
