Assignment 11A - Idea Napkin No. 1

1. You
  • My name is Kayla Shawver, I am a second year Business admin major with a specialization in management. I belive I have a talent of seeing the potential in people. I have experience of being a manager in a specialty retail store where I developed my mangerial courage and directorial skills while also being the youngest person who worked there. I eventually want to be a manager of a retail company. If I were to start this business concept, I think it would play a role in my life. With my aspirtations of management, I believe that starting my own business would give me valuable experience that I could apply to my future goals.
2. What are you offering to customers?
  • I am offering students and universities the opportunity to better themselves through a set of guided cirriculum. For students, I am offering welness and information based classes that can help them transition into adulthood and the new stage of life where they are living on their own. I am helping universities by helping their students cope with the stresses of living on their own, which should in turn help ther mood and overall academic preformance by taking away the unnecessary stress of things like laundry and banking. Also, universities wo adopt this cirriculum will gain public favor by supporting classes that support its students.
3. Who are you offering it to?
  • I am offering it to two main groups, students and universities. The students will be college aged, anywhere from 17-24 ( based off of my interviews). They will include any gender and any major, there is no one who cant enroll in these courses. It will target students who feel that they have a lacking in knowledge or experience in some or all of these areas: basic politics, laundry, grocery shopping, personal hygene, healthy cooking, and exercise. It can also include students who dont recognize the need but want to further develop their skills in one of those fields.
  • The second group, the universities, can either be public or private with any demographic of students.  The only qualification is that they want to adopt the cirriculum and work it into their current courses and that they have the appropriate teachers to facilitate the lectures.
4. Why do they care?
  • I believe students will enroll in these courses and universities will offer these courses because it will help the students with the stress they feel about living on their own, which takes away from the enegry they should be putting into their school work and socail life. And the universities will look very good publically that they care about their students and making their transition into college life as easy as possible by offering courses about it.
5. What are your core competencies?
  • As to the best of my knowledege, from the research I have done in regards to the interviews, there are no other courses like this. There are home ec courses that students can take as an elective in high school but that is the only comparable class I have heard of. There are no other universities offering classes to help their students where they can get college credit for it as well as learn valuable life skills.

I belive that all of these work well together and further prove my business idea if a needed one and one that has not been done before. However, there is one part that I believe to be weaker than the others. I do not have any connections within a university to see how feasable implementing a new course cirriculum would be. That is not saying I cannot email people and try and start asking questions, but as of right now, I do not have any previous networking connections that I could use to my advantage to develop the business idea. But since I am a student who has been through the trasnsiton period from living at home to alone at college, I feel that I am a good person to head this business idea and develop it further.

  1. Hi Kayla,
I think this concept can be very well implemented as an elective course for students. Maybe some already know what they're doing and wouldn't take it but I think the best way to advertise this class would be through word of mouth to incoming freshmen and for advisors to suggest it. This would benefit many students. It can also include things about saving money, etc.
