Assignment 9A- Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who:
  • So throughout my second round of interviews, I found that there are people who fall outside my identified market. These are the students who feel like they dont need to learn the skills that would be provided by this class, people who will just "learn as they go" and hope it goes well. Two interviewees who are seniors, and have never had a Home Ec. or instructional type class both claimed they turned out fine and that if they could learn as they go, why cant everyone else? They did admit that they didn't know what they were doing a lot of the time and made their fair share of mistakes but they made it fine and pretty healthy.
    • They did admit that there was a time that their parents, specifically their mothers were concerned they were not taking care of their bodies right, in regards to what foods they were eating (mostly fast food and ramen) and the fact that the only physical activity they were getting was walking to and from class (which wasn't very far). This showed me that there is another market that I hadn't considered, parents of the students who could take the class.
  • Another interviewee said that high-school students could benefit from it more than college students because they are still at home and could learn the skills and implement them easier, and the fact that their parents would have more influence over the classes they are taking as opposed to their very limited if non existent say in college courses.
  • And with an opposing view, two other interviewees when asked if college students or high school students would benefit/ want to take the classes more, said that even though it would be easier for high school students to take it, they wouldn't value the skills cause most of them still have parents who do most things for them and they wouldn't value the skills being taught until they had to be on their own.
What:
  • One interviewee, a college graduate, made a good point: these classes would definatley help students acclimate to college life and living on their own, but we live in the age of technology, if students really wanted to know something, they can google it. The real problem is students desire/lack of desire to learn.
Why:
  • I believe the need is not different, its just comes down to if they want help (high school students not recognizing their need) or if they want a new way of doing things ( college students just learning as they go).
Inside the boundary                                            Outside the Boundary

Who: HS students who want to learn before college       HS students who dont care because they cant                                                                                                         relate yet.
Parents who enroll their students (HS)                   Parents who have no say over their students                                                                                                           classes (college)
College students who recognize their need            College students who just want to learn as                                                                                                              they go
What: To help students live a healthy life                        To completely eliminate students eating junk                                                                                                           food
To shift some responsibility to the students           To take all responsibility away from                                                                                                                         parents/school/ authorities
Why: people adjusting to life away from home               Babying students who need to learn to be                                                                                                                  independent

  1. Hi Kayla,
I think by offering this class to students would be very helpful when trying to understand more about life after college. However, like you mentioned, some students just don’t see the need in taking a class like this and would rather just learn the topic when the situation arises. I think the idea of offering this class while in high school would be more fitting. This way students would have to take the course no matter what.

  2. Hi Kayla,

I think that these classes certainly could be beneficial, but I’m not sure how realisticly people would take these courses as part of their college path- unless they just needed a GPA booster. College courses are expensive, and googling it is free. You could specialize in one aspect (such as sewing or cooking) and create a club for it. However, if you want to stick with the classes, I think these courses would be more successful at a younger age.
