Assignment 16A - What's Your Secret Sauce?

Five ways in which I think I have Human Capital:
  • Desire for Knowledge - Whatever I am doing, I have a desire for knowledge and learning everything I can about the job, and even other peoples jobs. I like to know the "why" behind what I am doing.
  • Respect - Whatever role I am in, wether it is the lead or just an observer, I have respect for anyone working with me becuase I know that if everyone didnt do their job, wether it is deemed big or small, the task wouldn't get done properlly or on time.
  • Drive - I beleive I have a passion for perfection. This can sometimes be a bad thing but usually it pushes me to be better and also expect great things from the people I am working with.
  • Independence - I like being able to work by myself and knowing that I do not need to rely on others to complete a task. But this can be a hinderance if a job or project is collaborative or group centered.
  • Relatability - I can usually find common ground with someone who I am working with, this is helpful in many job related scenarios when you can't pick who you are around or working with.

Interviews:
I chose to interview my close friends for this interivew. I  asked them in person the same questions and I just recorded their responses below for this assignment.

The question I asked was:
"What do you think makes me different in regards to my 1) knowledge, 2) emotions, 3) skills, and 4) experineces. If you dont know what to say for some of them or have something else to talk about please do."

  • Corinne (friend):
    • " So for your knowledge, you know a lot about business because of your classes and your job which has taught you a lot about retail. You know your beliefs and will never falter in them. For your emotions, you have a really good hold on them. You don't show them to just anyone. You usually only share them when they are weighing you down and about to burst if you dont vent to someone. But because we have been friends for so long, I can tell what you are feeling even if you try to bottle them up. You have a broad range of skills, you are good at thinking of others and being meaningful in what you say and give. You are also creative and talented when it comes to art. And your experiences have really shaped who you are and the way you act. You put yourself in places where you can grow and learn new things to help you in the future, like this semester when you joined Retail You and the Retail Society. Your experience makes you a good candidate for any job you want and a better person."
  • Alyssa (sister):
    • "So for your knowledge I would say you think different than others, and then your emotions and feelings on stuff are always the opposite of what I am feeling. Well for your skills I would say you are good at school and time management since you are at UF, and you have also been pretty good at creative stuff like painting and drawing. You have different experiences than me since you are in college and I am in high school and since at your job you are a manager and at my job I am just a cashier. But your experiences have shaped you to who you are, like your manager job has made you more confident since it was new for you and pushed you out of your comfort zone since you are pretty quiet most of the time."
  • Kaitlyn (friend):
    • "For your knowledge I would say you are very smart, smart enough to know when you don't know something and are still able to figure out a solution. Your emotions are very controlled I would say, you know just the right amount of emotion to put into every situation. And additonally, I know you will always work hard at finding a solution, which I would say is a valuable skill. And I would say your best skill is wanting to be your best self, which benefits everyone. And then you are always trying new things and wanting to get involved, which give you a wide variety of experiences, and you have led others by example and teaching. "
  • Mira (friend):
    • So you always think outside of the box and you are usually very outspoken of your opinion. You are emotional at the right times. In a professional environment you are considerate of everyone around you. You are able to pull it together and put a smile on your face even if something is wrong. And then you are a hardworker and always give a 110% effort in everything you do. For example, in less than a year of working retail, you were promoted from associate to key holder, which has also been a great experience for you professinally.
  • Sara (friend):
    • " Ok so you know more about managing a store than most at your age since you were promoted to a manager position at Kate Spade at 19.  You hold your emotions together and are always composed which is a pretty good quality to have. You were even chill during our stats exam! For your skills, you know a lot about computers, something I do not know much about and you are very certain of your opinions. And for your experiences,  you  also love trying new things and you always want your friends to try them with you, which I like because I dont like doing things alone either and it's fun experiencing new things with friends as opposed to being alone.

Reflection
I wasn't surprised at any of the answers because I chose people who know me well so I could anticipate what they would say. I think their assessment of me and my skills are very close to how I would assess myself. The thing that kind of surprised me was that most of my friends expressed that they feel I have a desire to try new things, which I do, but I didn't realize how vocal I was about it where most of them would feel it necessary to include it in their answers. After hearing all of my friends and families responses, I would not make any changes to my original list.

Comments

  1. Hey Kayla, I am so wowed by the fact that you became a manager at Kate Spade at 19 that is so insane to think about because at 19 there are people who haven't even worked a job. You have to have a lot of ambition and know that you are really good at what you do, so own your accomplishments. I am proud of you, you are full of drive and determination and those are the qualities that are going to get you far in life. You are smart and are going to do so much.

  2. Hi Kayla, “relatability” is also one way I’ve listed which is why your post caught my attention. However, I think your desire for knowledge will get you far in life because if you like to learn, many companies are willing to put the effort into transforming you into someone who is useful to them as the company. Seeing that you also listed “drive”, I believe you are a person with great ambitions and many companies will definitely want you on their team.
