Assignment 19A - Idea Napkin No. 2

1. You

  • My name is Kayla Shawver, I am a second year Business admin major with a specialization in management.  After I have talked to people and recorded data from my friends, I have realized that I have a talent of seeing the potential in people. I have experience of being a manager in a specialty retail store, Kate Spade, where I developed my mangerial courage and directorial skills while also being the youngest person who worked there. I eventually want to be a manager of a retail company.
  •  If I were to start this business concept, I belive it would play a role in my life. With my aspirtations of management, I believe that starting my own business would give me valuable experience that I could apply to my future goals. My friends also have said that I like being the leader, so starting my own company would be best for my perosnality type.
2. What are you offering to customers?
  • This section has not changed. I am offering students and universities the opportunity to better themselves through a set of guided cirriculum. For students, I am offering welness and information based classes that can help them transition into adulthood and the new stage of life where they are living on their own. I am also helping universities by helping their students cope with the stresses of living on their own, which should in turn help ther mood and overall academic preformance by taking away unnecessary stress . Additionally, the universities who adopt this cirriculum will gain public favor by offering classes that support its students.
  • Based off of my feedback, I have realized there are certain components that my research has led me too. The cirriculum needs to incorporate classes/instruction in the subjects of: business, finance, personal health, dealing with stress/anxiety, and how to get involved in the specific university offering the class.
3. Who are you offering it to?
  • This section has only changed a little. I am offering it to two main groups, students and universities. The students will be college aged, anywhere from 17-24 ( based off of my interviews). They will include any gender and any major, there is no one who cant enroll in these courses. It will target students who feel that they have a lacking in knowledge or experience in some or all of these areas: basic politics, laundry, grocery shopping, personal hygene, healthy cooking, and exercise. It can also include students who dont recognize the need but want to further develop their skills in one of those fields.
  • The second group, the universities, can either be public or private with any demographic of students.  The only qualification is that they want to adopt the cirriculum and work it into their current courses and that they have the appropriate teachers to facilitate the lectures. The only factor is that the university has to be in the United States in the beginning of my business.
4. Why do they care?
  • I believe students will enroll in these courses, and universities will offer these courses because it will help the students with the stress brought on by living on their own, which takes away from the enegry they should be putting into their school work and socail life.
  •  And the universities will look very good publically that they care about their students and making their transition into college life as easy as possible by offering courses about it.
5. What are your core competencies?
  • As to the best of my knowledege, from the research I have done in regards to the interviews, there are no other courses like this. There are home ec courses that students can take as an elective in high school but that is the only comparable class I have heard of. There are no other universities offering classes to help their students where they can get college credit for it as well as learn valuable life skills.
  • Also, based off of my reasearch, I believe that people are not aware of having these problems until they get into college and if they see the courses offered before they start, it could raise peoples personal awareness of the skills they are lacking to live and function at a high level at school.
Summary:
This part has not changed. I belive that all of these work well together and further prove my business idea is a needed one and one that has not been done before. However, there is one part that I believe to be weaker than the others. I do not have any connections within a university to see how feasable implementing a new course cirriculum would be. That is not saying I cannot email people and try and start asking questions, but as of right now, I do not have any previous networking connections that I could use to my advantage to develop the business idea. But since I am a student who has been through the trasnsiton period from living at home to alone at college, I feel that I am a good person to head this business idea and develop it further.

Feedback:
In my revised idea napkin, I included a lot of information from my personal interviews and also the research I did with my friends. This added a lot of more perspective into me personally as a student and a potential entrepuenuer. Another thing I added based on my feeback is that I added another category to my cirruculum, and I also included all of the topics my cirruculum would include in my Idea Napkin.

Comments

  1. Hi Kayla, I also revised the part about myself by including what I have obtained through the interviews in the past assignments. Lack of connections is also a weak point I have when it comes to networking with others in my field of business. However, I think you made a good point about being able to adapt even after your transition into the college. Being able to do so will enhance your opportunities to develop your business idea for sure!

  2. Hi Kayla,
Being a leader type of personality is a good thing when it comes to opening up your own business. I have never heard of similar courses and believe they're fundamental especially since you'll be incorporating finance classes. Aside from learning how to live on your own it's important to learn how to deal with money and not spend it all from excitement.
