Assignment 21A - Reading Reflection No.2
Thinking Fast and Slow Summary - Daniel Khneman
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
I chose this book because it seemed like an interesting title and subject. The theme I found in the books is that it explored two different ways of thinking, the intuitive system and the rational system, reffered to as system 1 and system 2 respectfully, all leading up to show how our choices are made and how we can make decisions more consciously. Khneman said that exploring/understanding how those ways of thinking work, will help us make correct personal and professional decisions. He went no to say where we should/should not rely on our intuition and how we can benefit from intuitive or rational thinking.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning ENT 3003?
This book talked alot about thinking and the different systems we use to process thouhght. One part that I could connect with our class is how we are molded by our experiences. Every project/buisness idea I have read for this class had been conceived because the student had a personal experience with the issue in some way whch in turn led them to the business idea. The book states that we are made up of two beings, the experiences we pass through and the memories we create and keep from the experienece. It says that balancing our memories and experiences, so our version of what happened and what actually happened, is very important. It says that these memories form a good basis for future decison-making, which is what we as students used to think of ideas for this class.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise where students would participate in all the same activity, so they should all have the same memory of what happened and then have them individually describe/write down what they remember a day or two later and see what way they think. Are they a system 1 thinker, where they tend to be present in the situation in the way that they can believe. Or, are they a system 2 thinker where they are more anxious and the people tend to think and analyze everything and doubt the decisions or thoughts they have formed/make. I believe this would be very insightful to the participants and help them in the future if they knew how they tend to think and form their thoughts.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The biggest surpirse I found whe reading this book is that our mind is conditioned to be optimistic, even with no gaurentees. This surprised me because there are plenty of times that I can remember being the exact opposite of optimistic. It went on to say that this predisposition hinders our ability to calculate risks, which is intimidating because especially in college, I feel like you have to calculate a lot of risks about your future and classes. This was the one part of the book that surprised me but the book as a whole was pretty interesting, which was something I was not expecting.

Hey, I can relate because the book that I choose also interested me because the title was very applicable. I was also surprised by how much I was actually interested by the book. It made this class seem more important and all the assignments we have had to do a little more meaningful. Also, good job on the assignment that we had to create, maybe they will make us to do it for this class.
