Assignment 26A - Celebrating Failure

  • Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
    • My accounting class this semester has proved to be a challenge this semester. I am not an accounting major and my brain does not think that way naturally. And the class solely online proving to be harder to ask the professor questions and get advice from peers. The first failure I had in this class was the first exam, I was not prepared and I did not know how to study for this class. So after this exam, I utilized study edge to its full extent after the exam. I also utilized the textbook a lot after the first exam. And then I took the second exam and I got the same exact score, I was crushed. I had changed my study strategy basically completely so I figured I would have at least gotten a better score. I have not taken the third exam yet but I am nervous because I need to get a good grade so I don't have to retake it.

  • What I learned from it:
    • I learned that being overconfident can be dangerous. I was very confident with the second exam I took and when I got the same exact score, I was devastated. I also learned that not everyone studies the same way. My friend who is in the class got a good score both sides and I tried to study how she did but I didn't get a good score. It goes to show you that there is no one right way/one wrong way to complete a task or study for something.

  • Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?
    • I totally agree that failure is embarrassing. When my friends asked me how I did on the exam I didn't want to tell them I basically failed. It makes you question and doubt yourself, which isn't healthy. But, I believe that it is necessary. Failure does help you prepare for the future because you will fail again, in many aspects of life. I know it doesn't sound fun but it's life.
    • This class has taught me a lot about failure. I have learned from my peers and personal experiences how many ideas you have can fall through. But I have also learned that peer reviews and getting feedback is the best way to avoid huge failures down the line. I would say I am more likely to take more risks in regards to research and thinking of out of the box ideas that I would have at the beginning of the semester.

  1. Hey,
I feel you I took an online calc 1 class, and those online math intensive classes are difficult, making it harder to go to classmates for help, especially if you are taking the class because you have other physical constraints. But you can do it an pull through, you just have to change the way you study go and get tips and find every resources that you can on this campus and use it. Good Luck!

  2. Hi Kayla,
I can completely relate to this and I wrote a very similar post. My post was how I also failed my accounting exam, and I did so bad that I had to withdrawal from the class since I wouldn't be able to make a B for my major. I studied all weekend and spent several hours at the library every day for a week leading up to the exam. When I found that I did bad, I was absolutely crushed. I decided to withdraw and then go to see my professor on how I should improve. He provided me some insight, and I will be retaking the class over the summer. While retaking the course does seem like a nuance, I feel like it will be a good experience because I will be able to really learn the material. Overall, you shouldn't feel ashamed about failing your exam. There are many people that fail, but no one talks about it but it happens all the time.

  3. Hey Kayla,
I've felt the same way several times. You feel so sure that you'll do great and when the results come in you didn't do as good as you thought. It's frustrating to experience this but maybe it helps us realize that the way we studied isn't the best. Online courses can be challenging especially for accounting I'm sure you have to spend lots of time studying. I hope you did great on your third exam.
